Getting and staying in shape is important for you – but your workouts may be more important for your family. The reason: your family is inexorably drawn to follow your fitness example – for good or bad. How you manage your personal fitness and nutrition has a ripple effect that spreads across your entire family.
Your “personal ripple effect” may be one of the most powerful forces shaping your family’s mental and physical future. Consider the following:
We are products of our environment. We gravitate toward what we are repeatedly exposed to. It’s a simple matter of repetition. The more we see, hear, use, or eat something the more it becomes ingrained in our psyche. In fact, social scientists believe environmental repetition may have an effect on gene expression and can literally change your biochemistry.
The power of suggestion is strong. The power of repeated suggestion is practically unstoppable. So if you’re making poor fitness and nutrition choices at any age, it’s likely your family will be making the same choices shortly.
Your example, your behavior, your habits are being absorbed by your family at warp speed. You have the power to influence the health and fitness of every person in your family (your children, your spouse, your siblings, your parents — and even your friends). The fitness habits you help them build will keep serving them in every area of their life… and there is no better gift to give people than the gift of health.
Kate and Val at Zone Active Fitness Centre at Taylors Beach, a family and community oriented fitness facility, see the impact that consistently exposing people to a healthy lifestyle has on individuals. As people mature, they embrace exercise as a natural, fun part of their lives.
I recently caught up with a few of their members, and here’s what they had to say about the gym and their family fitness:
Helen Jabarian from Corlette is mum to 2 children aged 3 and 8 years
“My family attend the centre together and each participate in our individual classes which are catered to our different levels of fitness and fun!!
The gym is very welcoming and all the staff are helpful and awesome. They really go out off their way to make sure you are exercising safely and correctly. My kids are the main reason that I went there and now I love it so much that I go for myself just as much as I go for them. The fact that I can take part in a class at the same time that my youngest is enjoying a class is just so great… we are all getting fit together!!
And knowing that I’m setting a good example for my kids and trying to be fit, is important to me. I feel so much happier as a person within myself and my fitness has improved immensely since joining the gym.”
Vera Striner from Corlette is mum to 4 children aged 1, 3, 6 and 8 years.
“Zone Active is the perfect choice for my family as they offer programs from preschool to adult, which gives me the opportunity to workout and get fit while my kids are having fun doing their own program.
As a family, sharing a love for fitness does not only offer us time to bond, but also ensures us more happy, healthy years together. Sharing physical activities with my kids isn’t just a good way to burn calories, but also a great way to create memories which my children will treasure forever… memories of time we spent laughing and simply enjoying each other’s company.”
Verity Chappell from Corlette is mum to 6 children, between herself and her partner Simon, aged 6, 9 and 13 and 3 older children who have moved away from home.
“Zone Active offers more than just weights & “aerobic” classes, it is a very family friendly gym with a wide variety of classes & activities enabling us all to train under the same roof.
Simon & I feel we are being good role models to our children by exercising together. The convenience of being able to train in the one spot is also a huge help. We are very family oriented & Zone Active is a place we can all enjoy together.
Kate & Val have made us all feel welcome since day one. Their wonderfully positive attitude helps facilitate our enthusiasm to train & push ourselves to get the best out of our bodies. Our children thoroughly enjoy their fitness classes & can’t wait to get there each week.”
Furthermore, Kate explains that Zone Active doesn’t just facilitate family fitness, but also offers a “community within a community”… and we all know there is strength in numbers. Encouragement abounds between members ensuring fitness success.
Of course, creating family fitness habits is a day-to-day process with a series of repeated small steps that add up to awesome health habits. Every time you choose the vegetables over the chips, a walk over a drive, and a fitness activity over TV, you’ve just made another donation to yourself and to your family’s lifetime health and fitness fund.
It’s your personal ripple effect in action…
